Black Sesame Ice Cream and Grass Jelly

Today is the last day of summer and what a fantastic summer we’ve had. We really made the most of the sun and nice warm (and sometimes extremely hot) weather and took the girls to the beach and park just about every weekend. I even have a decent tan. To farewell summer, I decided to make black sesame ice cream with grass jelly and condensed milk dessert. This is my take on a dessert called “final fantasy” served at Passionflower. I love grass jelly and in this dessert it balances the sweetness of the ice cream. And of course the condensed milk just make everything tastes so much better.

Black sesame is one of my favourite ice cream flavours. I wanted to make black sesame ice cream but I don’t have an ice cream maker. The easiest way to get black sesame flavoured ice cream is to mix black sesame paste with vanilla ice cream. Although the thought of refreezing ice cream does not thrill me but I was desperate and was willing to experiment. I toasted some black sesame seeds and then use my Magic Bullet to blend the seeds. Surprisingly the Magic Bullet did a great job of blending the sesame seeds to a fine paste (it was stuck many times and I had to take it out and shake it to loosen the paste from the blade). I mixed the black sesame seed paste with vanilla ice cream straight from the freezer and mixed together quite quickly. Then it was back into the freezer.
The moment of truth came when I had to take it out from the freezer after a couple of hours. The ice cream was very hard and difficult to scoop out as it broke into pieces. It definitely tasted very black sesame but doesn’t have the creaminess. I find that the black sesame ice cream you buy doesn’t have enough black sesame and my ice cream had lots of black sesame. Overall I’m happy with the results and would definitely do it again.
Good bye summer and come back real soon!

Yen, you should try making icecream from scratch. You don’t really need an icecream maker for it; it just takes a bit of time but it is certainly rewarding! Shoot me an email to ask me how..
Black sesame icecream is lovely. I love the nutty flavour it brings. Good work on the dessert though!
I hate the colder weather. I can’t believe we are in March already! Where has all the time gone?

Oh I love the look of this!! I was given an ice cream maker a couple of months ago and had great plans to make such interesting deliciousness but it hasn’t quite happened yet. Thanks for the inspiration
